Homi Adajania shares throwback picture of Irrfan Khan from Angrezi Medium, says "you shone brighter than anything in the universe"

Indian cinema's prolific actor Irrfan Khan breathed his last on Wednesday, April 29. The actor was fighting his battle with the neuroendocrine tumour for the past several years. He past away at the age of 54 but his legacy remains!

His last movie Angrezi Medium released on March 20, 2020. The actor couldn't do the promotions due to health concerns. Homi Adajania, director of the film, reflected on his journey and remembered him in an emotional an post. Sharing a photo from the sets of the film where the two of them were hugging each other, "We laughed about you dying... in fact we often abused your “uninvited guests” .... but I didn’t think I’d feel so fuckin broken when I heard what I was expecting to hear for a while now. I am eternally grateful for walking a few steps of your journey with you. I am eternally grateful that I could call myself your friend. I am eternally grateful for memories stuffed with so much joy, so much laughter in such little time. You once told me how you had an inexplicable love for your craft, but didn’t want the stardom anymore. Well, you never needed to be a star my friend, because you shone brighter than anything in the universe. ????❤️ RIP #irrfan."

His co-star Radhika Madan, who played the role of his daughter, also her condolences to his family. "I don't know what to say... my heart aches when I write this. He was one the strongest people i knew, a fighter. And so are  Sutapa ma'am, Babil and Ayan. I'm just grateful that our paths crossed in this lifetime. He is and will always be an inspiration to many. A legend. The man who changed the wave of the Indian film industry. May his soul rest in peace," she said in a statement.

Some of his prolific work includes Salaam Bombay!, Maqbool, Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Haider, Piku, Talvar and Hindi Medium.

10 times Irrfan Khan left us spellbound with his performance

The industry lost a gem today as we woke up to the news of the demise of Irrfan Khan. The actor, 54, suffered from a colon infection and was admitted in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for the past couple of days. After his last release, Angrezi Medium, he was asked not to shoot for a few months since it wasn’t long before he suffered from a neuroendocrine tumour. The actor was known for his realistic and impeccable performance which left us all speechless. Not just in Bollywood, Irrfan Khan also aced in Hollywood and has starred in some massive projects including The Amazing Spiderman, Inferno, Life Of Pi, and Jurassic World to name a few.

An ode to the impeccable and irreplaceable actor, let’s take a look at some of his best performances and remember him for what he did best.

1. Maqbool (2003)

Maqbool, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, will forever be etched in our minds with Irrfan Khan and Tabu playing the lead roles. the story was based around William Shakespeare’s Macbeth with Mumbai’s underworld as the backdrop. Even though the film did not do well at the box office, the script brought out the best in the actors and even got the director international recognition. Irrfan’s performance as a don’s henchman who falls in love with his boss’ daughter is truly commendable.

2. The Namesake (2006)

Based on a book by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Namesake was quite an unusual script of its time. Unlike most of the book’s adaptations, this film did not lose the essence of the book and it yet again saw Irrfan Khan and Tabu in pivotal roles. Even though Kal Penn was the actual lead of the film, Irrfan Khan’s screen presence left us all mind-blown. Playing the role of a migrant from West Bengal in United states, as usual, Irrfan Khan got the diction and nuances on point.

3. New York (2009)

New York had Irrfan Khan playing the role of an agent trying to catch hold of a terrorist gang in the city. Playing the role of Agent Roshan, Irrfan was seen working closely with Neil Nitin Mukesh’s character and we’re all aware of how no one does intense roles like Irrfan! He proved yet again that he was a gem to this industry in this Kabir Khan directorial.

4. Billu (2009)

Billu was the first film where Shah Rukh Khan played the role of a second lead. Revolving around two long lost best friends, Billu celebrated friendship in its purest forms. The film is still one of the evergreen ones and one of the major reasons behind it is Irrfan’s acting that left us on the verge of tears. Irrfan Khan is known to get into the skin of his characters very quickly and it showed.

5. The Lunchbox (2013)

A heartwarming story starring Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur, an accidental letter in a dabba ignites a beautiful friendship that leaves two strangers sharing memories and instances with each other. The Lunchbox showcased unadulterated friendship that moves on to something unexplainable with two of the brilliant actors of the industry. Even though it was underrated film, their performances were certainly otherwise.

6. Piku (2015)

Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan were seen sharing the screen space for the first time with Piku. The movie was about Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone’s roadtrip to Kolkata from Delhi, in a turn of events, Irrfan Khan has to drive them to their destination and it saw a lot of ups and downs. Irrfan Khan’s humourous side was beautifully explored in this film.

7. Hindi Medium (2017)

Highlighting the importance of education, Irrfan Khan’s struggle in Hindi Medium as a father trying to get the best education for his daughter was the highlight of this film. Facing all the ups and downs with a smile on his face, his character in the film resembled his own self to a great extent.

8. Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017)

Playing the role of a poet and author, Irrfan Khan’s spontaneity to start using a dating app and asking his date to accompany him on a trip won a lot of hearts of the audience. Some of the poems recited by him in the film hit the right chords in our hearts. Qarib Qarib Singlle is yet another underrated film that deserved much more recognition.

9. Karwaan (2018)

Marking Dulquer Salman’s Bollywood debut, Karwaan yet again explored a humourous side of Irrfan Khan with a disturbing childhood. His one lines and nuances had us giggling and looking at him in awe from time to time.

10. Angrezi Medium (2020)

Last seen in this Homi Adajania directorial, Irrfan Khan struggled to help his daughter study in London for her higher studies. Exploring the relationships shared by kids and their parents, Angrezi Medium left us teary eyed with Irrfan Khan’s moving performance.

As we say goodbye to the legend and maestro, we second across our deepest condolences to the family. May his soul rest in peace.

Irrfan Khan made his debut in the film industry with the 1988 film Salaam Bombay. In the film directed by Mira Nair, he played the role of a letter writer. From there on there was no looking back for the actor and all of us have witnessed his journey in front of the screen.

He gave more than 30 years of his life to the film industry and left his footprints even in Hollywood. A few years ago while talking to Bollywood Hungama, Irrfan Khan talking about his definition of success said, "That you should be able to choose the life you want to live. That is what in my view success is. The kind of life you want to live, your job or your success should allow that to happen. "

Irrfan Khan who passed away today morning was last seen in the film Angrezi Medium that was released in March, 2020.

An ode to Irrfan Khan

Dearest Irrfan,

Can't believe you are gone. Knowing you the way I do, you know better than most of us, what a cruel blow destiny can deal in our lives just when everything seems to be going as planned.

In 2017 you were supremely on top of the game with English Medium becoming both a critical and commercial success. I remember how pleased you were with the turn of events and how much it meant to you to be in a film that was not just praised by critics but also loved by the masses. I remember how disappointed you were when earlier your collaboration with the Raja of the Masses Anees Bazmi had failed.

Come to think of it, the film (I think it was called Thank You, though Sorry would have been a more appropriate title) failed. You didn’t. You never do. Have we ever seen a substandard performance from you? Not possible.

When your health began to fail you were puzzled. Why would Destiny play such a cruel game? When your worst fears came true you left for London for your treatment. But your films were released in your absence. Most notable of these was the American Indie oddity named Puzzle where, I am proud to say, you were the first Indian actor to play the romantic lead in an American film. This Marc Turtletaub –directed romance featured you as a jigsaw puzzle aficionado who has an affair with the married mother-of-two heroine (Kelly Macdonald).

Puzzle was ….well, a puzzle. While on the surface the deep silences and the bonding between two abandoned individuals over jigsaw puzzles suggested a wealth of enigmatic possibilities, the film possessed a bankrupt soul. Nothing happened. It was just an empty exercise in doing a variation on the classic film Falling In Love.

What stood out in Puzzle was the fact that you played a colour-blind culture-unspecific role. Nowhere was it mentioned that your character was a brown skinned Asian. You had broken another glass ceiling, and done us proud again.

But Puzzle came at a time when movies were the last thing on your mind. As you healed you needed your privacy more than ever before. I felt intrusive even to ask about your health. I didn’t want you to think I was being a prying journalist. Ever since you came back after healing I’ve kept my distance. The one text that you sent me said you are in no position to talk. I do hope you will be in that position soon. I miss our conversations. So matter of fact, so free of artifice.

Then suddenly you reconnected with me at the time when Angrezi Medium released. I requested for an interview, and you said speaking was not possible and would I email my questions. You answered every question with characteristic candour. It felt like old times. I was confident we would soon be speaking again.

Your kindness always struck me as unique to a business where self-interest always comes first and last. I remember once in 2015 my daughter who was studying at Columbia University needed to talk to you for a research project. You went out of your way to coordinate the Indian timing with the American, and spoke at length with her. Then you called to ask if she got the information she required.

Aisa kaun karta hai?

I remember speaking to you on your 47^th birthday about how young and healthy you looked.

You had laughed and replied, “I do look after myself. But not in an obsessive way. I work-out. But in my own way. I follow the regime that my body demands and not what the physical trainer thinks my body requires. Besides that, I think I am getting to do the work that I want. Inner contentment always reflects on your face and body.”

Sadly you signed only one film after your return. The lucky producer was Dinesh Vijan who managed to get Irrfan to do Angrezi Medium the sequel to the 2017 hit Hindi Medium. Now there won't be a third film.

The last time I spoke to you was two years ago in January 2018. You were very excited about the future.

“The most interesting thing was, I was honoured at the Dubai International Film Festival along with Cate Blanchett who is my most favourite actor. So it couldn't get any better for me,” you had told me enthusiastically. "I am happy of the audiences’ need now to watch fresher and newer content, hence it’s becoming easier to reach a wider audience a mass audience through my kind of films. So at this juncture it’s all coming together and happening organically.”

Kisiki nazar lag gayi, Irrfan. I will miss talking to you. Until we talk again I will connect with you through your performances. You don’t play characters. You own them.

There will be another one like you, my friend.

From Amitabh Bachchan to Akshay Kumar, Bollywood celebrities remember Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan was an actor extraordinaire. His talent took him beyond the limitations of Bollywood. The actor was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour in 2018. He fought a tough battle before succumbing to it on April 29, 2020. However, he gave the world one brilliant movie before he could say goodbye forever in the form of Angrezi Medium. So dedicated was he to the craft that he shot for the film while he was battling a tumour.

As he passed away today after dedicating 30 years of his life to cinema, Bollywood celebrities took to social media to express grief

Irrfan Khan left a hopeful last message for his fans during Angrezi Medium and it was truly emotional

Prolific actor Irrfan Khan, who was fighting the battle with the neuroendocrine tumour, passed away on Wednesday, April 29 in Mumbai.

The official statement read, “'I trust, i have surrendered'; These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heart felt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and  his memorable actions on screen. It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, 'As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it."

Irrfan Khan, who was last seen in Homi Adajania’s Angrezi Medium, could not promote his film due to health concerns. But, he did infact leave a hopeful message for the fans. Ahead of the trailer release, he shared an endearing video from all the moments he shared on the sets of the film. “Hello, Bhaiyyo aur Beheno! Namaskar! Main Irrfan. Main aaj aapke saath hoon bhi aur nahin bhi. Khair, yeh film Angrezi Medium mere liye bahut khaas hai. Sach, yekin maniya, meri dil ki khwahish thi ki iss film ko utne hi pyaar se promote karu jitne pyaar se hum logo ne banaya hai. Lekin, mere sharer ke andar kuch unwanted mehmaan baithe huye hain unse vartalap chal raha hai. Dekhte hai kis karwat uth baithta hai. Jaisa bhi hoga, aapko itelah kar diya jayega. Kahawat hai 'When life gives you lemon, you make a lemonade'. Bolne mein accha lagta hai but sach mein jab zingagi aapke haath mein nimbu thambati hai na, toh shikanji banana bahut mushkil ho jata hai. Lekin, aapke paas aur choice bhi kya hai positive rehne ke alawa? Inn halat hai nimbu ki shikanji bana paate hai ki nahi bana pate hai, yeh aap par hai. Par hum sab ne iss film ko ussi positivity k saath banaya hai. Par mujhe umeed hai ki yeh film aapko sikhayegi, hasayegi, rulayegi, phir hasayegi shayad! (Hello, brothers and sisters. I am with you and not with you. This film, Angrezi Medium, is very special to me. I truly wanted to promote this film as passionately as we made it, but there are some ‘unwanted guests’ in my body and they’re keeping me busy. I’ll keep you informed on that front. There’s a saying, ‘when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.’ It feels good to hear, but when life really hands you lemons, making lemons is really difficult).”

He concluded by saying, "Enjoy the trailer and be kind to each other. Watch the film. And yes. Wait for me!"

Some of his prolific work includes Salaam Bombay!, Maqbool, Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Haider, Piku, Talvar and Hindi Medium .

Nick Jonas turns Priyanka Chopra's in-house piano instructor

What new hobby did you pick up during this lock-down? For Priyanka Chopra, who is in the US with husband Nick Jonas, it has been a time of helping as many as possible, through awareness videos and fundraisers. However, with plenty of time in hand at home, she also decided to fulfill her pending wish of learning a musical instrument.

In a recent conversation with a publication, she revealed that she was learning Piano, and Nick had turned into her teacher. Priyanka added that she was having a lesson for half an hour to 45 minutes  every day, and the husband was glad to help her.

At the same time, she also misses dancing, and has taken a Hip-Hop dance class too. Nick, apart from being her piano teacher, also helps her with her physical training at home and doubles up as her companion in writing too! Quite an ideal domestic partnership that is.

Priyanka and Nick, together have contributed to several funds fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. The actor recently also performed at the One World concert, alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and others.

Kirti Kulhari on life after Four More Shots Please

Indu Sarkar’s Kirti Kulhari is the new Queen of the Web. Her new series Four More Shots Please Season 2 is breaking the internet. And that’s keeping her busy even during the lockdown. “I am working, promoting Four More Shots Please from home. I am also connecting a lot with my fans to talk about things I believe in, like ayurveda. I am a lot into yoga right now as a form of feeling healthy, rather than doing weights, etc.”

Kirti is using the time to revaluate her life. “I can’t wait to start afresh. So many things in my life have become clearer to me. I see this isolation as an opportunity to heal my soul. I know people are suffering and my heart reaches out to them. No point in getting anxious and impatient. It is time to cleanse our interiors.”

Four More Shots says Kirti is a lot of fun. “We had a lot of fun doing the two seasons so far. It’s like a big bunch of friends come together to have fun. Having said this, I must say it’s very hectic work. We shot in Istanbul. Getting the relevant permission; flying out there with such a large crew was not easy. It all looks effortless but it’s a lot of hard work along with fun. All of us four leads in the series Sayani Gupta, Bani J, Maanvi Gagroo and I, have grown close, though we have had our share of differences and times when we connected with one more than other. But now all four of us in a healthy space. The show has brought us together. We’re emotionally connected.”

Kirti had to perform a lot of sexually frank scenes and dialogues for the series. And she was okay with that. “I am very comfortable with sexual themes. I was very much ready to take on the frank sexual content. It was liberating doing it.”

Four More Shots apart, Kirti is treating the lockdown as a time of self-evaluation. “It a time of introspection. There’s very less movie watching. I am somehow in a more meditative space. I am reading after a long time .If I feel like watching something I go for a movie, not a series. I don’t have the patience to sit through a series. I am seeing films that I missed and the ones that I wanted to re-visit. I am reading cooking, helping my mom with household chores. I am also connecting with fans, listening to music, doing my riyaaz. Most of all being with myself. So it’s a time of hyper-activity.”

Does Kirti find herself eating more than usual? “Not at all. I am eating less usual because of less activity. I am experimenting with my diet for a year now. I have come to realize that we eat out of habit more than what the body needs. So since December I’m on intermittent fasting. I have become a much more mindful eater.

Sleep? “My usual 8-9 hours. I am not overdoing anything. I am leading a disciplined life through the crisis.”

Kirti’s advice to her fans on how to get through the current Corona crisis? “There is a lot to be learnt from this experience. This crisis is not about you and me but the whole world is engulfed in it. It’s time for the human race to re-think .We need very little to survive. So stop the excesses. This is Mother Nature’s warning. She is in control. We think we can rule the universe. How wrong we are! No matter who you are, everyone is in the same situation today. So get basic about your lifestyle. Learn to share what we have with others. It’s time to re-condition our lives. After a compulsory pause it’s time to press the refresh button.”

Kirti as a lot on her plate in the coming months. “I am in the official Hindi remake of The Girl On The Train. I am also doing a feature film with director Raj Singh Chaudhary where I play a singer. I’ve a short film directed by Pavan Kriplani and then I’ve another series on the OTT platform at the end of the year which I am very excited about.”

While Anil didn't mention the film name, it seemed like this was shot during Laadla shoot, the film that released in 1994.
